Rehabilitation Medicine is a newly introduced specialty and the older physiotherapy departments have been replaced by more scientific rehabilitation medicine department. In addition to physiotherapy other tools of rehabilitation medicine include occupational therapy, psychological rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation and provision of prosthesis. Rehabilitation Medicine Department at SMC is a rapidly expanding department. It provides consultation services by a person who is well trained in the subject. Latest electro medical equipment is available in the department. Equipment includes deep heating modalities like short wave and ultra sound therapy, Diathermy Electrotherapy unit, Digital traction units and therapeutic exercise machines. Prosthetic facilities are available in collaboration with rehabilitation medicine department Mayo Hospital Lahore. Psychology rehabilitation services are provided in collaboration with psychiatry department.
The first contact that a prospective student makes with the college for admission is through the Department of Students Affairs. That is the beginning of a lasting and caring relationship, which extends even after the graduation of the student from the college. This office functions as a friend, guide and counselor to students. The office provides and coordinates a variety of services including admission, counseling, and extra-curricular activities, accommodation, and student records including students’ electives, graduation protocols, alumni affairs and other aspects of the student life on campus not covered within the formal courses of instruction. The office also serves as a liaison between the college and parents. Student progress reports are regularly mailed to parents at the conclusion of each Block assessment and summative assessment/annual examination. Students’ attendance, behavior and discipline issues, which the college alone cannot ensure; where violations are observed; parents are usually brought into the picture.
All class rooms are equipped the on-line internet access, digital interactive smart boards, over-head projectors and multimedia projection. Air-conditioning provides necessary comfort to make the environment conducive to attentive learning. All classroom are modifiable (in a few minutes) from large class format to small group learning format OR vice versa. In addition to classrooms, there are multi-disciplinary laboratories; Clinical Skills Lab; five SGD/PBL/Tutorial rooms in college and five SGD/PBL/Tutorial rooms in Sughra Shafi Medical Complex- a teaching hospital of Sahara.
The Anatomy Department has a spacious dissection hall and there are well stocked museums for Anatomy, Pathology, Community Medicine and Forensic Medicine.
The Health Professional Education has following sections: 1) Curriculum Development, delivery & Implementation section; 2) Assessment cell; 3) Evaluation & Quality Assurance cell; 4) Clinical Skills Training & Monitoring cell; 5) Educational research. Multi-disciplinary Research and PCR laboratories have been established to promote research, local evidence generation; and to facilitate bench to beside translational research.
The Research committee of SAHARA Medical College, Narowal, has been constituted since its inception to promote research in basic biomedical sciences as well as clinical sciences. The well-established multidisciplinary laboratory; PCR laboratory and high tech diagnostic facilities of SSMC would facilitate our faculty & students to harbor the diverse research projects.
The “SAHARA Clinical Skills Laboratory” is designed for teaching and assessing learners at all levels of undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum. It provides the faculty members, medical students and nursing students with the skills to facilitate and enhance learning with the help of cutting edge technology tools, manikins, models and simulations. These practical skills are essential and the learners are required to display these in encounters with patients and mastered by only physician. It provides learners with the idea setting to practice the clinical and procedural skills, history taking, physical examination, communication and interpersonal skills. These simulated patient encounters transition students from the classroom to real patient contact in safe environment.
Among regular sessions, BLS courses are also conducted in this Laboratory. All the active learning experiences in the clinical skills lab and the enhancement of the scientific principles in the technical skills prepare the student for real life situation and the ability to engage in self-directed learning activities.
